Anomalies
The Threshold is not uniform. Across the material world and the frontier beyond it, there are places where the veils are thinner, thicker, damaged, or entirely absent. These anomalies are the physical evidence of a cosmological structure under stress.
Anomalies fall into three categories based on which boundary is affected.
Gossamer Anomalies
Where the Gossamer thins, the Immaterial bleeds into the material world. Life force flows more freely. Perception shifts. The boundary between what is physical and what is pattern becomes negotiable.
Thin places are locations where the Gossamer has always been naturally thinner: old forests, mountain passes, sites at high altitude where the air is different. These places attracted worship, reverence, and superstition for millennia. Temples and sacred groves were built on them. Fairy tales were told about them. They are real.
In thin places, fae manifestation is easier and more stable. Glamour is stronger. Living things grow faster, stranger, more abundant. Mortals in thin places sometimes perceive the Immaterial directly: fleeting impressions of vast structures, the sense that the world is layered, the feeling of being watched by something that is not hostile but is profoundly not human.
In deep space (in vacuum, which has Gossamer affinity) the entire veil is thinner. Long-haul crews and survey teams report phenomena consistent with passive Gossamer permeability: unexplained life-sign readings on empty ships, navigational instruments that briefly display impossible geometries, the persistent low-level feeling of presence that spacers call “the hum” and attribute to engine noise. It is not engine noise.
Named Gossamer Anomalies
The Old Growth Reserve, Earth. One of the last significant tracts of unmanaged forest on Earth. Officially preserved for ecological research. Unofficially, the Emerald Court maintains a permanent presence there, and the research teams who work the site have learned not to enter certain groves after dark. The Gossamer is exceptionally thin throughout the reserve, and Wyldfae activity is constant. Equipment failures are attributed to moisture damage. They are not moisture damage.
The Shimmer Fields, Aurelis-IV. A region of high-altitude grassland on a colony world with a thin atmosphere. Colonists have reported visual phenomena: rippling distortions in the air, transient structures visible at the edge of perception, fields of wildflowers that appear overnight and vanish by morning. Emerald fae have been sighted openly. The colonial administration has classified the region as a natural preserve and restricted access, citing “unusual atmospheric conditions.” The Ash Court has an intermediary embedded in the administration.
Jump Point Sigma-7. A specific jump transit corridor where the Gossamer appears to be permanently disrupted. Ships transiting Sigma-7 report higher rates of anomalous perception events than any other route: figures in corridors, doors to nowhere, comm channel interference. The Obsidian Court claims jurisdiction and has not explained why this particular route is affected. Ships that transit Sigma-7 arrive safely. Their crews are usually fine. Usually.
Shroud Anomalies
Where the Shroud weakens, the Stygian plane pushes through. These are the breaches that humanity’s guardian traditions spent millennia fighting, and that modern civilization has largely forgotten how to recognize.
Breaches are locations where the Shroud has torn, creating a temporary or semi-permanent connection between the material world and the Stygian plane. Active breaches are immediately dangerous: Stygian entities manifest, the dead stir, and the area takes on the characteristics of the underworld: cold, darkness, the smell of earth and still water, the sound of something breathing in a room that should be empty.
Small breaches seal themselves within hours or days. Larger ones persist, and the longer they persist, the more the Stygian plane establishes itself in the material world. Left uncontested, a persistent breach becomes a permanent wound, a place where the underworld has taken root and will not let go.
Traditional guardian practices (ritual, consecration, binding, exorcism) can seal breaches if applied early enough. The knowledge to do this still exists in fragments, preserved by isolated practitioners and secret societies. On most worlds, no one with that knowledge is available.
Named Shroud Anomalies
The Threshold District, Kovacs-IV. A section of mining colony infrastructure built directly over a Shroud breach that the original surveyors did not detect. Workers in the lower levels report cold spots, equipment that activates without power, and the persistent sound of flowing water where no water source exists. Three workers have been found dead with no identifiable cause. Autopsies showed no trauma, no toxins, no pathology. Their expressions suggested they had seen something. The company has attributed the deaths to “environmental stress” and increased counseling services. The breach is widening.
Shaft 9, Terris-II. A deep mining operation that breached a Shroud boundary at 2,400 meters. The boring team reported sudden temperature drops, equipment failure, and the emergence of entities that the official report describes as “indigenous fauna.” There is no indigenous fauna on Terris-II. The shaft was sealed and the mining operation relocated. Readings from the sealed shaft indicate that the breach has not closed. Something is still active below.
The Boneyard, Ceres Station. A decommissioned section of the oldest orbital habitat in the belt. Sealed off after a series of incidents involving maintenance crews who entered and emerged “different.” The station’s administration attributes this to chemical exposure from old industrial processes. The sealed section is cold, colder than vacuum should allow given the station’s thermal profile. Sound recordings from monitoring equipment in the sealed corridors pick up vocalizations in a language that linguistic analysis cannot identify.
Ancient Dark Intrusions
Where the Ancient Dark touches the material world, something different happens. Gossamer anomalies are strange but survivable. Shroud breaches are dangerous but understood. Ancient Dark intrusions are neither. They operate outside every framework that any culture has developed for dealing with the supernatural.
Intrusions are locations where the Ancient Dark has seeped into material reality through damage to both veils simultaneously. They do not produce fae manifestations or Stygian entities. They produce wrongness, a quality that resists description but is immediately recognized by anyone who encounters it. Physical laws become unreliable. Instruments return contradictory data. Biological organisms in the affected area undergo changes that are not mutations in any medical sense. They are structural failures, as though the body’s blueprint has been partially overwritten by something that does not understand bilateral symmetry.
Ancient Dark intrusions are rare. They are increasing.
Named Ancient Dark Intrusions
Site 117, Kandris-III. The aftermath of a mining operation that breached what the Obsidian Court later identified as both a Seal and a veil boundary simultaneously. The resulting cascade (Shroud tear, Stygian flood, and Ancient Dark intrusion) killed 11,000 colonists and rendered the surrounding region permanently uninhabitable. The site is now under quarantine. Readings from the perimeter indicate that conditions inside the zone are still changing. Detailed in Containment Events.
The Federal Exclusion Zone, Earth. A major metropolitan area sealed off after a containment failure. Official cause: industrial disaster. The actual cause is disputed: it may have been a Shroud breach that attracted Ancient Dark attention, a failed corporate experiment, or something else entirely. Readings from outside the perimeter are consistent with low-level Ancient Dark exposure. The Obsidian Court has refused to comment. Detailed in Containment Events.
The Kessler Void. Not a planetary site but a region of deep space approximately 40 light-years rimward of the core colony worlds. The largest known Ancient Dark concentration in mapped space. Formally interdicted by the UTCA due to “navigational hazards.” Corporate survey teams that have entered the Void have not returned. Long-range observation suggests the Void contains structures (not built, but grown or accreted) composed of matter that does not match any known element. The Void is expanding. Slowly.
Artifacts
Objects can carry anomalous properties. They are not magical items in the fairy-tale sense. They are material objects that have been altered by prolonged exposure to one of the three anomaly types, or that were deliberately crafted by beings with the knowledge to manipulate the veils.
Gossamer-touched objects have been exposed to the Immaterial long enough to absorb some of its properties. They feel subtly alive. They are warmer than their surroundings. Plants grow faster near them. People who carry them report heightened intuition, vivid dreams, and a persistent sense of connection to something larger. Fae prize these objects as anchors for material-world manifestation.
Shroud-marked objects have been exposed to the Stygian plane. They are cold. They feel heavier than they should. People who carry them report unease, disturbed sleep, and the feeling of being watched. In some cases, Shroud-marked objects serve as focal points for Stygian manifestation. Carrying one into an area with a thin Shroud can trigger or widen a breach. Guardian traditions have developed rituals for neutralizing or destroying such objects. The knowledge is rare.
Dark artifacts have been exposed to the Ancient Dark. They do not feel like anything. They register on instruments as normal objects, except that the readings are slightly wrong in ways that are difficult to specify. People who handle them report no immediate effects. The effects come later: subtle cognitive changes, a gradual shift in perception, the slow realization that something about the world looks different and has looked different for a while. Dark artifacts are the rarest and most dangerous category. There is no known method for neutralizing them. The Ash Court recommends destroying them. The Obsidian Court recommends not touching them at all.
